Our Water In Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo and Ventura Counties, our water comes from local wells and surface reservoirs which have very high levels of dissolved minerals. Add chlorine, and you have flavor and odor most people would rather do without.
ALL water in our area is either "very hard" or "extremely hard" according to national standards. Dissolved minerals - calcium and magnesium (rocks) - cause water to be "hard". There are about 2 pounds of "rock" in every 500 gallons of water that flows into your home. This dissolved "rock" builds up on everything it comes in contact with leaving behind hard scale, soap scum, and dry skin (yours!). Hard water and soap combine to dry your skin and hair by plugging your pores and preventing your natural oils from keeping your skin soft and moist. Appliances like dishwashers, washing machines, water heaters, and coffee makers are also damaged by hard water - they won't work very well or last very long.
Eliminating hardness causing minerals will help prevent dry skin, eliminate or reduce water spotting and scale buildup, prevent expensive replacement and repair of plumbing and appliances, and will save you money!
Drinking Quality
The municipal water districts do a good job at making sure your water meets "government safety standards" - if you think those standards are good enough. As far as taste and odor, there are no requirements they have to meet. Taste and odors come from the water source, your plumbing, and chemicals added to the water to keep it "safe". To measure the drinking quality of your water, all the dissolved solids are added up. The higher this value, the lower the quality (NOTE - this is for "aesthetic" purposes (taste, odor, clarity) and can not detect microbiological or chemical contaminates). The TDS of common bottled water ranges from 90 - 180 PPM (parts per million) of dissolved solids. Your tap water ranges from 400 to 1,200 PPM.
A quality NSF International "certified" system will deliver water that is equal to or "Better than bottled" with more convenience and much less cost!
